The provincial government indicated today that, if no labour agreement is reached in the upcoming week, they will likely legislate ATA staff back to work when the legislature resumes sitting on October 27. Although the return-to-school date is not yet known, parents should prepare for the possiblity that classes could resume on Tuesday, October 28 or Wednesday, October 29.
Update: Friday, October 10, 2025
The ATA and TEBA will resume negotiations on Tuesday, October 14.
Update: Thursday, October 9, 2025
We have been asked by the Minister of Education to share his recent letter regarding supports for families during the strike.
Update: Tuesday, October 7, 2025
The Teachers' Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA) provided lockout notice to the Alberta Teachers' Association (ATA) on Monday, October 6. The lockout begins Thursday, October 9 at 1 pm.
TEBA has stated that this is part of a routine employer response to a strike notice, and will help provide stability and predictability in case rotating strikes should occur at some point.
We are continuing with our strike contingency plan, which is not affected by this lockout notice.
Update: Friday, October 3
As you are aware, the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) will begin strike action on Monday, October 6. We want to remind families of what this means for schools in St. Albert Public:
- The last day of instruction is today: Beginning Monday, October 6, schools will be closed to students and the public for the duration of the strike.
- Childcare arrangements: Please make alternate childcare arrangements starting Monday, as staff will not be on site and regular school programming will not be available.
- Do not send children to school or bus stops: Teachers and staff will not be present to greet or supervise students, and buses will not be running during the strike.
- Assignments and homework: Students will not be provided with assignments or homework during the labour action. Teachers will pick up their lesson plans from where they left off once classes resume. If you’re looking for support during the strike, please visit the Government of Alberta website for the parent support toolkit.
- Daycares operating in schools: Licensed daycares located within our schools will remain open and continue regular operations. Please confirm directly with your provider.
- Return to classes: Once the strike ends, schools will reopen. Please be prepared for short-notice communication regarding the return date.
- Government supports: The Government of Alberta is offering resources to families, including a parent support toolkit and the parent payment program to assist during school closures.
We understand that this situation creates disruption and stress for families. Like you, we want nothing more than to have students back in classrooms, learning and connecting with their peers. We will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available through email and on our division website.
Thank you for your understanding and support of our teachers as we navigate this difficult time together.

Update: Wednesday, October 1, 2025
As you may have seen in the media, the Alberta Teachers’ Association has declined the Government’s most recent offer, which means that a province-wide strike is currently scheduled to begin on Monday, October 6, 2025.
Important reminders
As the date approaches, we would like to remind you of the following:
- The last day of classes will be Friday, October 3, and schools will be closed to the public after this date.
- Please ensure you have alternate childcare arrangements as of Monday, October 6 and for the duration of the strike. Do not send your children to school or to their bus stop. Staff will not be on site to greet or provide support or services to students, and buses will not be running.
- Ask your children to bring home any personal items they may need during the strike on Friday, October 3, as they will not be able to access the school until the strike ends. This includes any medication their school office may be holding for them.
- Daycares in our schools will continue regular operations.
- When the strike ends, please be prepared for short notice about the return date.
Government supports
The government will be providing the following two supports for families to consider:
Parent Payment
To help ease the extra costs families may face while children are home during labour action, the provincial government is introducing a parent payment program.
This support will be available to parents and guardians of students aged 12 and under who attend a public, separate or francophone school affected by the disruption. Eligible parents and guardians would receive approximately $150 per child for each week of labour action.
The payments will be made monthly, commencing October 31 and will be retroactive to October 6.
Applications will be available through the Alberta.ca platform. Further details, including an instructional video on the parent support payment, will be available soon.
Parent Toolkit
To give families flexibility during the labour disruption, Alberta Education and Childcare has created a free toolkit that parents can use to help support their child’s independent learning when schools close.
The toolkit provides weekly resources that follow the K to 12 curriculum. Resources are available in English and French Immersion.
The toolkit includes materials for two weeks of learning. Additional weeks of learning materials will be added as needed.
Download the toolkits at new.learnalberta.ca.
We recognize these learning materials are not a substitute for in-class learning with our teachers, however, they will provide families and students with a few learning options during the labour disruption.
We know that there continue to be many unanswered questions for everyone and as things continue to unfold, we will continue to update you via email and on our division website of any major developments.
We know how stressful this is for families. We all want children to be at school, learning and socializing with their peers, and hope that we’ll be able to come back together very soon.

Update: Wednesday, September 24, 2025
A tentative agreement has been reached between the Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA) and the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA). The next step in the negotiation process is for TEBA and the ATA to go through a ratification process. We will know the final decision no later than Wednesday, Oct. 1.
This may mean a strike will be averted, however, until the ratification process is finalized, the strike remains scheduled to begin on Monday, October 6.
We encourage families to continue making plans as if a strike will be taking place, as it is always better to be prepared…just in case.
Once we know the final results of the ratification process, we will share another update.
We understand the stress and inconvenience this brings to families, and are hopeful that we will be able to move forward without a disruption to student learning.
We will update families as soon as we become aware of any further developments.

Update: Wednesday, September 10, 2025
The Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) announced today that they will deliver province-wide strike notice on Friday, September 12, 2025. The strike is set to begin on Monday, October 6, 2025. Please note that ATA staff in our schools includes all teachers, principals and assistant principals.
What does this mean moving forward?
- Unless a settlement is reached prior to Monday, October 6, the last day of classes in our schools will be Friday, October 3. Do not send your children to school after October 3. Our schools will be closed to the public, staff will not be on site to greet or provide supports or services to students, and buses will not be running. If necessary, please ensure you have plans in place for alternate childcare arrangements as of October 6.
- Please ensure your children bring home any personal items that they may need during the strike. Again, our schools will be closed to the public at the end of the school day on October 3.
- It is our intent that SIGIS daycares in our schools will continue operations.
We know how stressful this will be for families. We all want children to be at school, learning and socializing with their peers. The ATA has indicated that they hope they can reach an agreement with the province before October 6. We too hope that an agreement will be reached prior to that, and that our staff and your children can remain in the classroom.
We will update families as soon as we become aware of any further developments.
