Board orientation for the newly-elected board will take place either October 27-28 or November 3-4 from 9 am- 4 pm, depending on the release of the official election results. Election Day is Monday, October 20, 2025
- Albertans vote for their school board trustees as part of the municipal general elections.
- School board trustees are locally-elected representatives who play a critical role in shaping the future of public education. Locally-elected public school board trustees oversee and provide important governance for school boards in our education system.
- School boards are crucial decision-making bodies that guide the educational experiences of thousands of students across Alberta.
- The Guide for School Board Trustees is available on Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA) website. It highlights the vital role of a school board trustee in Alberta’s education system and outlines the path to becoming one.
Key election dates
Date | Event |
January 1 | Nomination period opens and the earliest date a municipal, school or Ombudsman employee wishing to be nominated may notify the employer that they are taking a leave of absence. A notice of intent form must be filed prior to filing nomination papers. |
May 1 | Start of “election advertising period” in which local jurisdictions must maintain a register of third parties who engage in election advertising. |
September 22 - noon | Nomination period closes. |
September 23 | Candidates may withdraw their nomination in writing, in person. |
September 30 |
New Filing Deadline Campaign Disclosure Statement (Section 147.4(2) of LAEA): If you have accepted contributions between January 1, 2025 and July 31, 2025 (including self-contributions), you must file the required campaign disclosure forms by September 30, 2025. This is a new provision of the Government of Alberta in legislation passed in May 2025. |
October 20 | Election day. |
October 22 - 4 pm | Deadline to receive a request for a recount. |
October 24 - noon | Recounts must be complete. |
November 8 | Last day for an elector to request a judicial recount. |

The notice of intent is a new legislated requirement and is different than the nomination process. Candidates intending to run must notify the City of St. Albert and St. Albert Public Schools by emailing the following to election@stalbert.ca and janeen.juse@spschools.org. There is no form to complete.
- Name, address and contact information for candidate.
- Records address (the address of the place where records of the individual are maintained and of the place to which communications may be addressed).
- Name and address for campaign’s financial institution.
- Names of signing authorities.
Once confirmed by the City of St. Albert Election Office, the name of the candidate will be posted publicly and included on the Register of Candidates.
