School Re-Entry Plan 2021-2022

Update: August 30th

Update to school re-entry plan regarding mask requirements in schools

St. Albert Public Schools has updated its school re-entry plan in response to the recent increases in COVID-19 cases in St. Albert and the greater Edmonton area. In the past two weeks, daily COVID cases have tripled in St. Albert, and the Edmonton area is responsible for more than 30% of the province’s current daily cases. As positive cases continue to rise across the province, our re-entry plan will now include masking requirements in an effort to make sure our return to school is as safe as possible for our students and staff, to prevent outbreaks within our schools, and to keep our students in school, and our schools open, as much as possible.

Our schools will require all students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 and all school and division staff to wear masks while inside school buildings for the beginning of the 2021-22 school year. This will be reviewed at the end of September; further decisions will be based on current case counts in our area, and may vary by age group.

Students and staff will be required to wear masks while in classrooms as physical distancing is not possible, in common spaces (hallways, washrooms, etc.), and on school buses (as mandated by the provincial government). Teachers have been directed to provide mask breaks during class time (e.g. quiet independent seat work, taking the class outside). Students will not be required to wear masks outdoors, during strenuous physical exertion or when eating or drinking. We want to continue to work with families and those students who are medically, physically and/or psychologically unable to wear a mask, and those who cannot wear one for reasons under the Alberta Human Rights Act; these families may request a mask exemption.

This decision was not made lightly, and we recognize that masking is a highly divisive issue among our parent community. However, we need to consider the safest path forward for our students and staff, and masking, combined with our other efforts, will help us ensure our schools can open as safely as possible.
