Academic Challenge Program

Bring out the best in your gifted child with our Academic Challenge program!

Is your child intellectually gifted? Are you seeking a more challenging learning environment for him/her?

Academic Challenge (AC) might be right for your child if he/she:

  • seems disinterested in regular classwork;
  • may finish assignments ahead of classmates;
  • is looking for leadership opportunities at school;
  • demonstrates high motivation, strong problem-solving ability, logical thinking and creativity;
  • has very specific areas of interest, which sometimes interferes with schoolwork and/or peer relationships; or
  • is interested in pursuing Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate classes in high school.

Our AC program offers an enriched curriculum to help keep your gifted child engaged and motivated to reach further. AC encourages students to:

  • follow their interests;
  • learn at their own pace;
  • work with like-minded peers;
  • use a variety of resources to conduct research; and
  • learn creatively.

The program offers unique learning opportunities that challenge your children and feed their curiosity and passion for knowledge and growth.

GOALS (Gaining Opportunities and Life Skills) Program

The GOALS program supports students' individual needs and maximizes their personal strengths. School staff will work in partnership with students and families to ensure successful student-focused planning. Inclusive-minded programming focuses on students being engaged and connected to their school and community. Within the GOALS setting, each student is encouraged to build the skill sets, opportunities and experiences they will need to be prepared for a successful transition into adult life. We focus on three foundational pillars of academics (literacy and numeracy), engagement and wellness to ensure each student’s program is individualized to their learning needs and identified personal interests.

Knowledge and Employability (K&E) Courses

K&E allows students to take courses that will provide them with the opportunities to experience success at school and become well prepared for employment, post-secondary studies, engaged citizenship and life-long learning. These courses are intended to maximize student success to allow for junior high and high school completion. The program allows for students to enter into RAP and Work Experience for further training in preparation for specific employment opportunities. Students should be working together with a high school counsellor upon entrance into high school to ensure that they have selected the appropriate courses.

Learning Assistance Program

The Learning Assistance Class supports students who have average cognitive abilities and significant delays in classroom achievement. The goal of this program is to improve academic skills and support students in developing strategies that will allow them to manage the goals of returning to the regular program, as they progress to grade level expectations. This program has a primary focus on literacy and numeracy skills in a smaller classroom setting with an increase in targeted instruction specific to individual needs. Students require a recent psychoeducational assessment including a cognitive assessment and achievement test (preferably the WISC-V and WIAT-III) along with the recommendation from their current school in collaboration with the parents to qualify for this program.

Opportunity Program

Our division offers different classrooms within our Opportunity Program that are grouped to allow for students who have been diagnosed with mild, moderate or severe intellectual disabilities to receive adapted programming based on their level of need. This allows for the teachers and support staff to be able to provide individualized and small group instruction in the areas of literacy, numeracy, engagement and life skills that are appropriate for the student’s academic, social and physical development.

Please note that program location will be determined based on the individual needs of the students.
