St. Albert — The Board
of Trustees of St. Albert Public Schools is thrilled to announce that its
newest school will be named Joseph M. Demko School, after well-loved and
highly-respected former teacher, principal, superintendent and trustee Joe
Demko. The recommendation to name the school after Mr. Demko was unanimously
passed at the public board meeting on Wednesday, September 9, 2015. This school
will open after Lois E. Hole Elementary School, which is currently under
“When naming a new school, we consider several factors, including a person’s impact on our district as a whole,” explains Board Chair Glenys Edwards. “As our district policy states:The Board of Trustees believes that schools should be named after persons or concepts that bring honour to the school and district by representing the district's values, beliefs and commitment to students. Mr. Demko exemplifies these traits and has touched thousands of lives during his time with our district.”
Mr. Demko’s history with our district began when he started student teaching with us in 1969. Since then, he has served as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, assistant superintendent, superintendent and trustee. He is the only person in the history of our district to have served in all of these roles.
“Mr. Demko is a strong and committed advocate for children and public education,” says Chair Edwards, “and we can think of no better way to honour this contribution than by naming our newest school after him. A new generation of students will now be aware of the significant impact he has had on our district and the world of education.”
“‘Students come first’ has always been the basis of this school district, and I am thankful to have been given the opportunity to contribute to the education of our students by being part of a school community that supports this philosophy,” says Mr. Demko. “Our schools are more than buildings. They are places that provide opportunities for students to learn and develop skills that will allow them to fulfill their dreams and make our society a better place for all of its citizens. I feel extremely honoured that the Board of Trustees of St. Albert Public Schools has chosen to attach my name to a place where this can happen.”
Joseph M. Demko School will serve students from Kindergarten to Grade 9 and is tentatively scheduled to open in the 2017-2018 school year.
