Balanced Literacy

During the first cycle of AISI, Grades 1, 2 and 3 and primary special education teachers were invited to participate in professional development for Balanced Literacy. This program provided a structured model for early language arts instruction, meeting the instructional needs of all students within the regular classroom. Schools created collections of appropriate leveled texts for instruction, to move children from instructional to independent reading levels.

Teachers used specific instructional approaches to help students develop strategies to become independent readers and writers. Based on the work of Dr. Anne Brailsford, this program for elementary language arts is comprised of several different components:

Word Block

  • Word Wall (High Frequency and Sight Words)
  • Making Words
  • Sort and Transfer

Reading Block

  • Read Aloud
  • Shared Reading
  • Guided Reading
  • Independent Reading

Writing Block

  • Modeled Writing
  • Shared Writing
  • Guided Writing
  • Independent Writing
